Megan’s Law and Other Penalties Beyond Jail Time

While jail time is obviously a serious concern and something that should be avoided at all costs, the additional consequences of a sex crime conviction in New Jersey can extend far beyond any period of incarceration. In New Jersey, Megan’s Law requires lifetime registration for certain sex offenders, and registration may result in your photograph and personal information being distributed to your neighbors and posted online. There are three tiers of punishment under Megan’s Law:

  • Tier One – Lifetime registration with the local police.
  • Tier Two – Lifetime registration, posting of your photograph and information online, and notification sent to local schools, child care centers other community organizations.
  • Tier Three – Lifetime registration, online posting, community notification, and notification distributed to everyone in your neighborhood.

In addition to Megan’s Law registration, individuals convicted of certain sex crimes in Haddon Heights will be subject to parole supervision for life. If you are convicted of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact or certain other offenses, you will be on parole indefinitely once you are released from jail. This means that you will:

  • Have to report to a parole officer regularly;
  • Have to obtain permission to live at a particular residence, move, or take a new job;
  • Have to notify your parole officer if you lose your job;
  • Be subject to searches of your residence, car and belongings for cause; and
  • Be prohibited from using an Internet-connected computer, phone or other device without permission.
