Understanding the Immigration Consequences of Crime

Many defendants plead guilty because they are offered a better deal than they would get if they lost a trial. If they are not American citizens, they risk deportation if they plead guilty to certain crimes.

It is never wise to plead guilty to anything without the advice of a competent NJ attorney who is familiar with Immigration law.

Many guilty people are not convicted of a crime or are accepted into diversionary programs and avoid a conviction. A good attorney may convince the prosecutor to reduce or dismiss the charges. An expungement sealing of a criminal conviction may not help an immigrant seeking to stay in this country legally.
